Steely Dan is a must in my collection, but does it get as much attention as it should? It is like a perfectly crafted instrument polished and exhibited in its case. But when you want to play, you grab hold of your rather beaten up, finger marked, buckle scratched guitar, and strike. A few bends, scrapes, buzzes, and crunches later, you realise you've not listened to Idlewild enough. Great video, and I totally get it. Steely Dan, is your perfect desert island disc until you get sand in your socks.

Thanks for articulating this response Andy. Mike is awesome and the “Time in Place” album is the greatest. Love all your vids. We are into the same stuff. Slade. Yessss. ( bumped into Don Powell in the Co op in Bexhill once!😆) Grew up on them. They were the original reason I got into guitar……… Then there was “ Birds of Fire”……….. Holdsworth, Henderson etc. x

Andy, I’m a subscriber, a big Yes fan (Going for the One is one of my favorites) and I have enjoyed your long form analyses of progress rock, as well as this interview with Mr. Powell, the bands drummer… As an American, here’s my personal take on why Slade was not bigger in the USA … I remember seeing Slade once on TV (Midnight Special? Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert? I don’t recall…) and I remember that I thought they looked weird and I did NOT like the music much, while the first time I saw Nazareth or Bad Co., I remember thinking, YEAH, this is cool music! So… Why did Slade not make it in the USA? They had a Great singer… the bass player plays chords (cool, not typical) … they had energy … BUT … not all the songs were as catchy as “Feel the Noize”… as heard in this performance, the ballad was actually pretty good, but most of the other songs had unimaginative lyrics, the rhythms don’t grab me, the lead guitar is super basic… and I don’t think Americans knew what to do with the IMAGE… the costumes had too much contrast… the bass player and drummer looked cool, the lead guitar player was flashy in his silver suit, BUT the platform shoes with high water pants… just look dorky! And the lead singer should look as cool,as he sounds, but he does not look cool… PLAID pants like your grandpa would wear, news boy hat, suspenders.. which the Brits call “braces”…. What were they thinking? It didn’t seem to bother the Brits, Auzzies and Europeans, but we Americans like our glam rockers to look cool, like the NY Dolls, Bowie, or T Rex… Cheap Trick had a weird image, with two handsome longhairs up front, plus a drummer that looked like an overweight accountant, but Rick Nielsen had his own complete image, so he looked dorky in a cool way, not dorky in a dorky way…. Music is more than image, so for sure, I have an open mind and I will check out some more of their material, especially their six number one songs, to get a more complete assessment of their development and quality… and yeah, I can see how they might have influenced KISS, but from the start I think KISS had better songwriting and a more complete image. They may have analyzed Slade and improved on the formula … ??? I thought KISS was basic and fun as a teen, but at the time (1970-1975) that Slade was most popular (I was born in 1960) I was a bigger fan of Cream, Procul Harum, Yes, the Stones, Hollies, Elton John, Zeppelin, Beatles, Bowie, Kinks, the Who, and many American acts, including Grand Funk, Santana, ZZ Top, Todd Rundgren, the Eagles, Allman Bros, as well as LOTS of MOTOWN!

The "Americana" Grammy winning standout over the past 15 years has been Jason Isbell (and the 400 unit). But I get it. Your "Americana" umbrella is huge and encompasses everything uniquely American with NO (direct) influence by the UK. But this dude is the best song writer over the past 15 years IMHO and worth a listen.

“Drums” is one of the ultimate concepts of humans not using their intellectual abilities. Hear me out… I’ve been a musician since 1989 and a high school music teacher/director since 2000. I embrace the evolution of rhythmic instruments but I am baffled that drums, guitar, and bass became the standard instruments as opposed to the continuation of evolution. Think about it… when a child pursues music, these three instruments have been the core instruments. However… acoustic drums inherently sound bad. On their own, each individual drum is not pleasant to the human ear. Even if tuned perfectly by Steve Gadd, if you hit a tom, it rings out in an unpleasant sound. Cymbals are harsh, abrasive, and non-musical. When was the last time that you hit a cymbal next to someone’s face without risking their deafness and your black eye? I understand all about dynamic range, blah, blah, blah. But I also think outside the box and embrace diversity in creating percussive rhythms. My favorite “drums” = tabla. But, there are so many options. So many choices beyond the harshness of a snare drum or a lifeless thuddy bass drum. We got stuck, we didn’t question it, we followed those who came before us and inspired us, and we forged ahead with blinders. So many musical percussion instruments out there that can integrate the full dynamic spectrum of frequencies and create unique coloration to complement other musical instruments in an ensemble. And, lest we forget how difficult it is to tame the many unwanted frequencies, timbres, and the ringing out that requires anything from Moongels to wallets, tissue paper, etc… in order to tame the unwanted nastiness. If ever we can deservedly use the term “sheep” to describe us, playing drums would be high on that list. I’m open to opinions and thoughts…

Great video Andy. It's great to understand that this is a combination of African, South American, European and Asian all coming together in the drum kit. It is worth mentioning that the Swing technique timing of the stick free falling and reflecting back is really oscillations determined by the length of the stick from the hinge. Quite amazing, really. Gotta watch out for the auto-gain on the iphone which makes the recording volume duck when the drums hit it loud enough. When you talk right after the playing, the volume takes a few seconds to increase because of that shitty automatic gain control feature. And that solo at the end was just wicked!!!

God I loved Slade as a kid I was about 7 to 9 years old. My story - I was too young to see them as a kid, then was into AC/DC at 16 and was going to the Monsters of Rock with Slade supporting, I had a strange opinion that they were my kiddie band and I wasn’t that interested. So when they were due to come on during the day I went to have a wee in the disgusting ’toilets’ and heard them start. Only to come back to the crowd going mad. They were throwing massive toilet rolls out into the crowd, Dave stood on a speaker stack, a massive wall of sound Noddy wailing, with the crowd throwing containers of water, beer and piss up into the crowd. They were bloody fantastic and for me, stole the day and made me reassess my childhood prejudices.

'Be' from 'Whatever Happened to Slade ?' (1976) sounds like the best version of The White Stripes . Slade also had a very charming song titled 'Sign of the Times' from that era that ended up being the b-side to 'Lock Up Your Daughters'. Concerning their early 80s material it was so exciting to see Slade performing 'We'll Bring the House Down' on TOTPs ! I love so many of their songs from this time including ' Let Me Luv Into Ya' and 'My Hat My Coat' ; thank you Slade !!!
